Word Origin

Latin, early 19th century

Why this word?

A bibliophile is one who loves books, and a bibliolater takes it even further with the worship of books. “Bibliolater” was initially used to refer to a person who interprets the Bible on an extremely literal level, but over time, the word itself was interpreted more literally. The combining form “-later” comes from the Greek “-latrēs,” meaning “worshipper,” and it’s paired with “biblio-,” which is used for anything relating to a book. A bibliolater could manifest in many ways, as there are myriad ways to worship books. Perhaps they only purchase hardback books, or they have a favorite book that they gift to all their friends.
