Word Origin

Greek, mid-17th century

Why this word?

If your dog starts producing epic streams of drool while they’re begging at the dinner table, they suffer from ptyalism. This condition, characterized by excessive salivation or drooling, can also be called hypersalivation or sialorrhea. “Ptyalism,” which came to be used in English medical contexts in the late 17th century, came from the Greek “ptyalizein,” meaning “to salivate.”
