Word Origin

Latin, mid-19th century

Why this word?

“Personalia” developed from the classical Latin word “personālia” (“personal”); however, its first use in the context of a collection of writings and belongings of a notable individual was found in a mid-19th-century issue of the magazine “The North American Review.” Pop artist Andy Warhol was obsessed with keeping the miscellaneous objects of his life. He filled cartons that he called time capsules with anything he came in contact with — notes, receipts, letters, toys, coins, anything and everything. Once he filled a carton, he would date it, file it away, and start on the next. This collection of personalia can be seen on display at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh.
