Word Origin

Greek, late 16th century

Why this word?

The first usage of “panoply,” no longer in use today, referred to protection for spiritual warfare, in reference to a Bible verse from Ephesians: “Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.” The early translations of the Bible used some variation of “panoply,” from the Greek “pan-,” meaning “all,” and “hopla,” meaning “arms.” Soon the word was used to denote a full suit of armor and ceremonial attire. Today, these usages are almost gone, and instead “panoply” refers to an impressive array of something, or the full complement of items.
