Word Origin

Italian, early 15th century

Why this word?

“Nonchalance” means being (or appearing to be) in a calm or relaxed state. Similarly, “sprezzatura” is studied carelessness — which might seem oxymoronic. “Studied” means it takes hard work to pull off the air of effortlessness, but that’s why it’s a name for an artistic style. Some artists claim to work in a careless sprezzatura style, but not everyone can be the next Picasso or Jackson Pollock. It takes hard work to imbue a childlike doodle with intention.
