Word Origin

English, early 17th century

Why this word?

There’s a difference between calling someone a “Muppet” and calling them a “moppet.” A moppet is a small, sweet child, while “Muppet” is a term coined by puppeteer Jim Henson for a combination puppet and marionette. Miss Piggy might take exception to being called a moppet. “Moppet” is an English word; the noun evolved from the now-obsolete word “moppe,” which meant “baby” or “rag doll.”
