Word Origin

Latin, early 16th century

Why this word?

The noun “interlocutor” comes from the Latin “interloqui,” meaning “to speak between.” While anyone who participates in a conversation can be called an interlocutor, there’s a formal meaning associated with debating. The interlocutor is the opposing speaker, or one providing a contrasting viewpoint. The word was also used in the minstrel theater tradition, referring to the leading character who provided instructions to the rest of the performers.
