Word Origin

Greek, early 19th century

Why this word?

This word originates from a combination of the Greek word “hōra” (which means “time”) and the suffix “-logy” (“a subject of study or interest”). Horology, the art of making clocks and watches, is a skilled process. All components of the clock must work together in harmony to deliver the correct time, but there is an artistic element as well. Cuckoo clocks are a prime example of the science and art of horology — the timekeeping mechanisms trigger hourly “cuckoo” sounds and elaborate decorations that might dance around the clock housing. The distinctive “cuckoo” sound is produced by “gedackt” pipes, a type of stop found in organ pipes.
