Word Origin

Greek, early 19th century

Why this word?

Do you want to try a new hobby? Pick up a glyptic skill — whittling is the act of carving objects or figures out of a small piece of wood, and it’s a surprisingly easy pastime to pick up. All you need to begin your first glyptic wooden creation is a piece of softwood (easier to carve with), a knife, and patience. “Glyptic” is borrowed from both French (“glyptique”) and Greek (“gluptikos”) words of the same meaning, but these words originally developed from the Greek word “gluphein,” which means “carve.”
