Word Origin

French, early 20th century

Why this word?

“Naturellement,” a wine-related term, comes from French. “Demi-sec” translates directly as “medium dry”; in wine terminology, “dry” refers to little or no sugar in the wine. A demi-sec, or medium dry, wine will still have some residual sugar in the wine, resulting in a slightly sweet drink. The term is most commonly applied to champagne, with the sweetness of the bubbly beverage ranging from brut (driest) to sec (dry), demi-sec (medium-dry), and doux (sweet).
