Word Origin
French, mid-17th century
Why this word?
Borrowed directly from the French “béatifique,” the word “beatific” best fits the semi-ironic viral hashtag “#blessed,” which is used on everything from inspirational quotes to posed selfies. The word “beatific” is also used in Christian theology to mean “imparting holy bliss.” Even more specifically, the Beatific Vision was a direct vision of God.
