Word Origin

Latin, late 17th century

Why this word?

When it comes to describing the order of things, ordinal words such as “first,” “second,” “third,” and “fourth” describe the beginning of a list, but what about the end? Latin gives us more sophisticated words than “last.” “Ultimus” means “last,” “paene” means “almost,” and “ante-” means “before.” Turning those into English words, “ultimate” is the last, or final, object. “Penultimate” means “second to last,” and “antepenultimate” and “preantepenultimate” mean “third from last” and “fourth from last,” respectively.
