Word Origin
Old English, pre-12th century
Why this word?
Sometimes spelled “adze,” this tool was common with woodworkers before mechanical planers came into use. To the casual viewer, it looks somewhat like an ax, but the blade is much thinner, and it’s set at a right angle to the handle. “Adz” is strictly an English word: It appeared in Old English as “adesa,” but it can’t be traced back to older Germanic roots.
